B.C. Summer Games a peaceful event, say Prince George RCMP…

Prince George RCMP is very pleased with the atmosphere that pervaded the B.C. Summer Games, which the City hosted this past weekend.

“The athletes, spectators, coaches and staff who came to Prince George were a great example of teamwork and community. We had very few complaints to police about incidents at the venues and everything was resolved peacefully when we did attend. From a policing perspective, this was a highly successful event for Prince George,” states Superintendent Shaun Wright, Officer in Charge of the Prince George RCMP.

In total, police attended six files that were directly related to the B.C. Summer Games. Two were for transient persons camping in venue locations and not leaving when asked. Twice police removed intoxicated persons from a venue when they would not leave on their own: one person left peaceably in a taxi and the other was arrested for being drunk in a public place. The fifth file was a report of theft of Summer Games equipment from a vehicle, which was soon located nearby. Police also attended a venue to keep the peace while representatives from the B.C. Games met with angered parents and athletes after learning their team was disqualified from the games.

“In addition to our regular compliment of Frontline police officers and Downtown Safety Unit officers on duty during the weekend, we organized several additional patrols specific to the B.C. Summer Games, including police officers from our West Coast Marine Unit, who were present at Ness Lake. Police officers patrolled the venues on foot and on bike to ensure the games went smoothly and safely for everyone,” states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.
