Police say at approximately 3:17 PM, officers received a report that staff members at Safeway detained a shoplifter when a struggle ensued. The suspect had attempted to pull what appeared to be a handgun from his waist during the struggle.
The employees, assisted by members of the public, were able to restrain the suspect and take possession of the alleged weapon.
While being detained, police arrived and arrested the suspect without incident. The weapon was later identified as a CO2 pistol.
The man, who is well known to RCMP, is expected to appear in Provincial Court later this afternoon.
Police have recommended 5 different charges against the accused, of which includes Using a Firearm in the Commission of Offence.
