On May 14, 2023 at approximately 12:30pm, an officer with BC Highway Patrol – South Coast – Chilliwack was conducting speed enforcement on Highway # 1 in Popkum, BC. The officer observed a white Ferrari making multiple lane changes and overtaking other vehicles at a high rate of speed. The officer established that the vehicle was traveling at a speed of 161 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone. After bringing the vehicle safely to a stop, the officer discovered that the driver, identified as a man in his 30’s from the Lower Mainland had a bulldog on his lap.

Constable Blair Fuller, of BCHP –South Coast – Chilliwack said Driving any vehicle at this rate of speed with or without an animal on your lap is dangerous for all involved. Driving with a pet on your lap can interfere with your ability to safely control the vehicle.

The speeding vehicle was impounded, and the driver has been charged with multiple counts under the BC Motor Vehicle Act in relation to his speed and obstructed control of the vehicle. The driver and his canine companion will now be getting to their destination safely.

BC Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists that May is High-Risk Driving Awareness month, and police agencies across the Province will be stepping up enforcement of dangerous driving behaviour. To learn more, click here.
