Road construction continues throughout Prince George…

As anyone who has driven down 5th Avenue in the past week can attest, Prince George is in the middle of a big paving push. Eight operations to rehabilitation local roads began last week, starting with milling and preparation work. Note: timelines for all paving operations depend upon favourable weather conditions.

This week, crews are beginning to repave multiple milled sections of road – including on 5th Avenue between Johnson Street and Douglas Street, which started earlier today. Repaving will also begin this week on the section of 5th Avenue between Voyageur Avenue and Ospika Boulevard.

Preparatory and milling operations have also started this week on a significant section of road just south of Connaught Hill. This project will see operations on Connaught Drive between Juniper Street and 17th Avenue. Many streets near and adjacent to Connaught Drive will also undergo rehabilitation including parts of Juniper, Kenwood, Larch, Norwood, Oak, Pine, and 16th Avenue. Elsewhere in the city, the northbound lanes of Ospika Boulevard between Davis Road and Range Road were milled earlier today, and are scheduled for repaving in the next few days. 

Repaving operations are also about to commence on multiple sections of recently milled road including:

• North Nechako Road and the Fortis substation 1.4 km to the north of the intersection
• Douglas Street from 5th Avenue to 2nd Avenue
• Ewert Street from 5th Avenue to 2nd Avenue
• Freeman Street from 5th Avenue to 2nd Avenue
• Renwick Crescent from Melville Avenue to Winnipeg Street

Paving operations were recently completed on the Cameron Street Roundabout and on River Road from the Cameron Street overpass to the Cameron Street Bridge. Sidewalk repaving operations are also expected to start up again later this month. 

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible to avoid traffic congestion in the area of paving operations and to drive cautiously whenever around road crews.

Background

This year, the City of Prince George will be resurfacing about 43 lane kilometres of road. The City is also rehabilitating about 1.3 kilometres of sidewalk. In total, there will be 38 road-resurfacing projects, and five sidewalk projects in the 2021 paving season.

The year’s largest projects will be a 4.3 lane kilometre stretch of Northwood Pulpmill Road, while the largest sidewalk operation will be about 365 metres along 20th Avenue from Queensway to Maple Street.
