UPDATE 3… CN Rail train derails near Giscome Elementary School…

UPDATE 3: Upper Fraser Road is now open to full traffic following the train derailment on Thursday morning. As for Giscome Elementary, nothing has changed at this time and students will be bussed to Blackburn Elementary. The situation will be accessed for Tuesday.

UPDATE 2: Giscome Elementary will be closed on March 9 and info on that is below this update. Below is info from School District 57…

Due to the closure of Upper Fraser Road as the result of a train derailment on Thursday morning, Giscome Elementary School will remain closed on Monday, March 9, 2020.

Staff and students from Giscome Elementary will be re-routed to Blackburn Elementary for Monday, March 9. Buses will pick up students at their regular times and transport them to Blackburn Elementary. Giscome students who live beyond the road closure will not be picked up, nor be expected to attend school. If families have made alternate arrangements for transportation, students will be attending Blackburn Elementary.

Students who attend Prince George Secondary and live beyond the road closure will not be transported by bus to and from school on March 9. As a result, students will not be expected to attend.

PRINCE GEORGE, BC: The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has sent a team of investigators following a train derailment this morning near Giscome…

While details are very limited at this time, we can tell you the incident occurred just before 10 AM and prompted the evacuation of nearby Giscome Elementary.

Children from Giscome Elementary were transported to the Willow River Church and picked up by parents soon thereafter.

CN Rail says the derailed cars, around 20, are not posing a threat to the public and there are no leaks or fire.

The road in the area remains closed. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
