PRINCE GEORGE, BC: Starting at 7:00 AM on Monday, June 8, Carney Street will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian public access between Winnipeg Street and Ellison Drive to allow crews to install a water main connection for the new fire hall, currently under construction.
The traffic disruption is expected to take about one week. Carney Street is expected to be reopened by the morning of Monday, June 14.
The new fire hall will be approximately 50% larger than Fire Hall #1, which it will replace, and have the capacity to house a modern Emergency Operations Centre and Fire Operations Communications Centre.
The new location on Massey Drive is more centralized and will greatly increase the area firefighters are able to reach within the critical eight-minute response time.
During construction, northbound motorists traveling on Massey Drive who are attempting to turn west onto Carney Street will be required to detour north via 17th Avenue, Spruce Street, and 15th Avenue.
Southbound motorists traveling on Carney Street attempting to reach the intersection of Carney Street and Winnipeg Street must detour via 15th Avenue.
Traffic signs will be in place to notify and direct the public.
On the morning of Tuesday, June 9, water service will be shut off for about five hours as part of the operation. Residences and businesses are advised to run their tap water until its clear if they experience cloudy water during this time.
All residences and businesses in the affected area have been notified of the impending closure.
