An Alberta man has died following a level 2 avalanche in BC’s backcountry over the weekend…
Police say on Sunday (March 3) at approximately 1 PM, officers, including the Revelstoke Search and Rescue, were notified of an avalanche in the Sale Mountain area near Revelstoke.
A 58 year-old man was snowmobiling with a group when an avalanche was triggered, burying and trapping the man in snow. Group members located the man and began digging him out to provide first-aid.
The man was transported via helicopter to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke and was pronounced deceased at the hospital a short time later.
Avalanche Canada has extended the backcountry avalanche warning for BC and Alberta mountain ranges until at least Thursday, March 7, 2024.
RCMP and Avalanche Canada say that avalanche conditions remain High to Considerable in the Revelstoke area. The Revelstoke RCMP strongly suggests backcountry users to take the necessary precautions before heading out. It is recommend the public checks Avalanche.ca for the most up to date information on conditions in the backcountry.
