North District RCMP has released details on a police incident on the Alaska Highway in Fort St. John Thursday evening…
Police say at approximately 8:15 pm, officers responded to a collision involving a pedestrian on the Alaska Highway, just south of the 271 Road.
Investigation has revealed that a pedestrian, who was dressed in all dark clothing, was walking across the Alaska Highway when they were struck by a southbound vehicle. At the time, the area of the roadway was dark with minimal lighting from industrial business in the area.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene and the driver of the vehicle stayed on scene and is cooperating with police.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the contributing factors but police do not believe speed or impairment are involved. The Alaska Highway was closed for hours between 269 Road and 271 Road following the collision while officers, including a Collision Reconstructionist from Prince George, conducted a forensic examination of the scene.
The Alaska Highway has since reopened.
