Windy conditions on Friday have increased the current fire situation in the Prince George Fire Centre over the past 24 hours and smoke will continue to blanket most of the region for the weekend.

Fires in the VanJam (Vanderhoof and Fort St. James) area have seen an increase in fire activity due to the strong wind. Wind is once again in the forecast for Saturday in the Prince George region and that could bring in more smoke.

The BC Wildfire Service said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) the largest potential for spread in BC this weekend will occur in the Prince George Fire Centre, where fires could grow 10-20 km over three days. Fires within the Cariboo, Coastal and Kamloops fire centres may see 5-10 km of growth and growth within the Northwest Fire Centre may be tempered by rain.

As for rain in the forecast for the Prince George area, the upcoming forecast suggests rain to fall possibly on Sunday evening and Monday night into Tuesday. Cooler temperatures during the day are also in the forecast for Prince George next week with the return to late summer and fall temperatures a few days later.

Evacuation Alerts and Orders have been updated for the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako and for the Fort George Regional District.
