A driver is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop on Highway 16 near Smithers last week…

Police say on July 31, 2023 at approximately 3:30 pm, an officer with BCHP – Smithers was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 16 in the Rose Lake area when a speeding Honda Accord caught the attention of the officer.

The officer pulled the vehicle over and a discussion with the driver took place. The officer became suspicious of the driver and their story. Upon further investigation, the officer located a significant amount of suspected drugs inside the car, including cocaine and fentanyl with an estimated street value of $250,000. The driver was arrested and the vehicle impounded as property related to crime.

Inspector Darren Woroshelo, OIC of Northern BC Highway Patrol said, “The substances that have been seized from within this vehicle can no longer pose a danger to those in our communities or on our highways. I commend the work of this officer as well as all others who work tirelessly to make our highways safer together every day.“

The driver who is known to police has since been released and is now facing multiple charges under the Criminal Code of Canada and BC Motor Vehicle Act.
