UPDATE: It has come to our attention that this traffic stop maybe should have not happened. According to a social media post by the owner of the vehicle in question, he has said that it is a legal truck and was pulled over due to no mud flaps or a fender. The vehicle passed inspection in 2020. The BC Government in 2016 made a change for specialty collector cars to be on the road without mud flaps or fenders.

The BC Highway Patrol failed to mention what modifications were illegal in their media release to the public today.

With the summer season and beautiful weather upon us, car enthusiasts take their antique vehicles, collector vehicles and modified specialty vehicles out of hibernation and onto the streets and highways to be enjoyed not only by their owners, but adults and children alike.

On May 31, 2023, BC Highway Patrol – Prince George stopped a motorist in the area of Ruggles Street, operating a vehicle with extensive modifications.

Upon performing a roadside inspection, it was noted the vehicle did not comply with the BC Motor Vehicle Act Regulations (MVAR) and did not meet the parameters of an exemption under the MVAR,” said Cpl. Serge Bruneau of BCHP – Prince George.

The driver was issued a violation ticket and issued an inspection order for the vehicle in question, which was registered as a 1931 Ford.

BC Highway Patrol would like to remind the public that modifications to a vehicle must meet the requirements of the MVAR. Also, if you believe your vehicle falls under an exemption, ensure you are familiar with the requirements of that exemption.

Some modifications to a vehicle increase the risk of altering or negating safety mechanisms, operation or overall handling of a vehicle. This may lead to an increased risk to the occupants, other motorists, pedestrians or cyclists on the roads.

BC Highway Patrol in partnership with Prince George Municipal Traffic Services are dedicated to road safety and are focusing on vehicle modification and compliance with the MVAR as part of their regular enforcement on the roadways.
