Highway 29 is open to single lane alternating traffic. Expect delays. As of 1 pm, June 16. (We had the wrong Hwy number before. Apologies for the delay in fixing that.)

Motorists be advised that Hwy 29 is currently CLOSED from Fort St. John to Hudson’s Hope due to washouts along Hwy 29. There is no detour. For a list of roads affected, and not all will be on this list, click here.

As of Monday evening, there are 47 sites estimated. Ministry engineering staff and the maintenance contractor are assessing the areas and planning repairs. Six of 13 closed roads have now re-opened. Some impacts:

: A sinkhole developed on Highway 97 at the south end of South Taylor Hill due to a damaged culvert. The highway remains open to single lane alternating traffic, and repairs are expected to begin Tuesday and last approximately two days.

: A washout has occurred at Sweetwater Road (north of Dawson Creek), and there is an alternate route. Repairs will begin when water levels recede.

: Originally, there were two sites, at 243 and 214 Roads, where residents were stranded. The ministry has been in contact with these residents and the water has now receded to passable levels.

: Highway 52 North at Sunset Creek is reduced to single lane alternating traffic due to flooding.

: Highway 29 is closed from Mile 54 to Hudson’s Hope. This was just added to the list during the overnight.

We expect more closures and delays as work begins on repairs. The storm system has left the region after dumping between 30 mm and 100 mm of rain over three days. The latest forecast suggests an extensive dry period is coming to the region this week.
