Suspects arrested after falling for BAIT…

PRINCE GEORGE, BC: Last week frontline officers with the Prince George RCMP’s Downtown Safety Unit proactively utilized bait property…

On Tuesday December 10, 2019, Downtown Safety Unit members deployed a bait bike in the downtown core of Prince George. In just over an hour of deployment, three suspects were arrested for theft under $5000.

A 29 year-old man was the first to be arrested just before 2:00 PM. He was followed approximately 30 minutes later, by a 36 year-old man, and then by a 22 year-old man about 30 minutes after that.

All three men are residents of Prince George and will appear in court on March 4, 2020.

On Friday December 13, 2019, the Prince George RCMP’s Downtown Safety Unit deployed bait property inside a parked vehicle in downtown Prince George.

Just after 10:00 PM, two men approached the vehicle and looked inside. One of the men used a hammer to brake a passenger side window of the vehicle, despite the fact a window was partly rolled down. Both men grabbed items from the vehicle and fled on foot.

Moments later, frontline officers arrested 30 year-old Justin Dereck Murphy and 29 year-old Eugene William Jimmie a short distance away. The stolen items were recovered. One officer suffered a minor injury as a result of a struggle with a suspect.

While officers were arresting the two men, another man walked past the multiple police vehicles involved in the arrests and continued toward the parked vehicle. Despite the obvious police presence in the area, the man approached the vehicle and stole an item before fleeing on foot. He was arrested a short distance later.

The BC Prosecution Service has approved the following charges against Justin Dereck Murphy of Prince George:

  • Theft under $5000
  • Resisting arrest
  • Mischief under $5000
  • Fail to comply with an Undertaking
  • Possession of break-in instruments

Murphy has been remanded in custody and appeared in court this past Wednesday.

The BC Prosecution Service has approved the following charges against Eugene William Jimmie of Prince George:

  • Theft under $5000
  • Resisting arrest

Jimmie has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Wednesday February 5, 2020.

The third man, a 37 year-old Prince George resident, was released by a justice and scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday January 15, 2020.

“Our bait programs continue to lead to arrests and charges of those people in our community that choose to steal from others” says S/Sgt. Kent MacNeill, acting Operations Officer for the Prince George RCMP. “We often have people in handcuffs within minutes of deploying bait property. Having those people off the street will almost certainly prevent others from being victims.”

The Prince George RCMP will continue to deploy bait property and other tactics to identify and arrest those persons responsible for property related crime in our community.

Written and released by Prince George RCMP.
