UPDATE 2: Power has been restored to all affected areas as of 3 AM. Now we know what happens when lightning blasts a transmission line in the right spot.. Knocks out power for all of Northern BC.
Update: Hydro now states over 110,00 residents and businesses are without power from from Terrace, Kitimat, Smithers, Burns Lake, Vanderhoof, Prince George, Mackenzie, Chetwynd, Dawson Creek and Fort St. John. A transmission circuit failure is to blame which was caused by a lightning strike.
Some areas of PG remain without power while others do have it back on. Other communities are completely dark.
Keep updated using the BC Hydro website on your smartphone. The outages are not affecting residents south of Prince George. It seems to be situated around the Northern half of BC.
Just after 9 pm, the room went pitch dark for over 75,000 residents in the Central Interior and the BC Peace Region.
For some areas of Prince George, the power came back on 10 minutes after it went off but the BC Hydro website states close to *40,000 area residents in the Central Interior remain in the dark. The outages could be updated by the time this is posted so keep updated using the BC Hydro website.
Over *70,000 remain in the dark in the BC Peace Region.
Hydro does not say what happened as of yet. Once we know more we will update. That could be on Thursday!
