PRINCE GEORGE, BC: Emergency services including the Prince George RCMP attended the scene of a collision on Highway 97 near Wall Road early this morning.
Just before 6:00 AM on Monday August 26, 2019, the Prince George RCMP received a report of a collision between a tractor trailer and a truck on Highway 97 (Hart Highway) near Wall Road in Prince George. No serious injuries were reported.
The investigation found that a southbound pickup truck swerved into the northbound lane in front of a tractor trailer unit traveling at highway speed. The driver of the unloaded tractor trailer managed to swerve into the northbound shoulder to avoid a head-on collision. The pickup side-swiped the tractor trailer.
Investigators have learned that the pickup driver was in the process of dialing 9-1-1 in relation to another incident when he drifted into the oncoming lane putting himself and the other driver at risk. Although the Motor Vehicle Act allows for drivers to use their device to call 9-1-1 while driving, this incident is a reminder to drivers that the best practice is to always pull over in a safe location to make a phone call, even in an emergency.
The pickup driver was issued a Motor Vehicle Act ticket for failing to keep right.
