UPDATE… One man remains in custody. Matrix Savage GATHERGOOD has been charged with:
- First degree murder contrary
- Aggravated assault
- Disguise with intent to commit an indictable offense.
GATHERGOOD will next appear in court in Salmon Arm on April 23, 2019. The fatal shooting investigation remains active and ongoing as Salmon Arm RCMP are completing a number of tasks, including speaking with all possible witnesses and anyone who may have information related to incident.
Road and access restrictions to the church remain in place as Forensic specialists are continuing to process the scene. There is no timeline as to when police will have completed all required investigative steps.
“While we appreciate that there is great deal of public interest and
several questions being asked about the ongoing investigation, however
we are limited with the amount of information we can share at this time.
Our priority is to ensure we capture the relevant facts and evidence to
support a judicial proceeding and we must ensure that the information
gathered is not negatively impacted,” says S/Sgt. Scott West, Salmon Arm Detachment Commander.
“Additional resources have been called in to support the ongoing investigation, and officers will be looking at any and all previous investigations or interactions with the accused and the victims to determine their relevance to the ongoing fatal shooting investigation.”
Victim services continues to support the families and the community.
The family of deceased victim have advised that they are overwhelmed by media requests and have asked for privacy at this time.
The Salmon Arm RCMP is focussed on fatal shooting investigation and the ongoing core policing needs. All media requests are being handled by BC RCMP Communications.
SALMON ARM, BC: One person is dead an another is in hospital following a shooting this morning at a local church in Salmon Arm…
Police say just after 10:30 AM, Salmon Arm RCMP responded to a possible shooting at a local church on 5th Avenue SW. The church was hosting an event when a man allegedly entered the church and shot two of the parishioners.
Police attended and immediately entered the church and located two victims who were seriously wounded, both requiring medical assistance.
BC Ambulance attended and one individual was deceased at the scene while the other was transported to hospital in stable condition.
Police have notified the BC Coroners Service and the next of kin notifications have been completed. No information is being released about the victims at this time.
A 26 year-old man was taken into custody after being wrestled to the ground by a number of the parishioners. Police seized a rifle. The male remains in police custody with charges pending.
“While the investigation is in the preliminary stages, there is no information to suggest there are any ongoing threats to public safety. Police have determined that at least one of the victims was known to the suspect, and it is not believed at this time the event was religiously motivated”, says S/Sgt Scott West, Salmon Arm RCMP Detachment Commander.
Salmon Arm RCMP, with the assistance of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit, are conducting the investigation. Victim Services support has also been called in to assist with those impacted by the incident.
