KAMLOOPS, BC: The Kamloops RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Kamloops which has resulted in the death of a male.
Police say at 9:30 PM on March 12, Kamloops RCMP responded to a complaint from a business in the 100-block of Victoria Street that a man, who had previously been requested not to attend the business, was present and appeared intoxicated.
Officers located the man in a nearby parking lot. Based on their observations the man was arrested under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act and lodged in Kamloops RCMP cells, to be released when he was able to care for himself.
Just before 6 AM this morning, the man was found unresponsive in his cell and has since been pronounced deceased.
The IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s death. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
