The Shovel Lake Fire is now designated as being held, meaning that with the resources currently committed to the fire, sufficient suppression action has been taken that the fire is not likely to spread beyond existing or predetermined boundaries under the prevailing and forecast conditions.
While the past few weeks have seen winds from the west and southeast, with the prevailing southeast winds on the north of the fire today, there was a spot fire that occurred due to wind ember transfer. Bucketing helicopters quickly responded and were able to contain the spot fire before it spread into adjacent forest fuels.
The most activity continues in the northeast and southeast corners and resources are working to fortify these corners and cool fire behaviour. Crews are working to mop-up and patrol all active flanks, extinguishing hot spots along the fire’s perimeter and working with danger tree specialists and fallers to manage trees that have been compromised by the wildfire and pose a safety risk. Forty additional firefighters from Mexico who have just returned from some days of rest have been assigned to the southeast corner to help tie up objectives there. Gear is being demobilized off of secured areas throughout the fire. Bucketing helicopters will continue to assist crews in cooling down fire behaviour in active spots.
