Two off-duty officers bear sprayed…

QUESNEL, BC: Police are asking for the public’s help following an incident at Walmart in Quesnel Friday night…

Police say just before 9 PM, two off-duty officers were shopping at Walmart when they heard an employee yell at a man who was stealing a television. The suspect then threatened the staff member with bear spray and fled the store on foot.

Both off-duty officers chased the man through the parking lot towards Highway 97. One officer caught the suspect and identified himself as a police officer in an attempt to arrest the suspect. The suspect dropped the television, pulled out the canister of bear spray and sprayed the first officer directly in the face at close range. The second officer was also hit with bear spray.

Responding officers set up containment in the area and called for a Police Dog Service to attend from Prince George. Unfortunately, the suspect fled on foot from the parking lot and was not captured. It is believed he may have had an accomplice waiting for him in a vehicle nearby.

Luckily, neither officer sustained any lasting injury.

Police ask anyone with information about the man involved in this incident to call the Quesnel Detachment at 250-992-9211 or BC Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477
