Police rescue distressed female from falling off bridge…

NEW HAZELTON, BC: A Police Incident in New Hazelton on Wednesday evening sent a female to hospital for assessment…

Police say at 9:55 PM, New Hazelton officers received a report of a female standing in the middle of the roadway, not moving or attempting to avoid traffic.

Police immediately attended the scene and located the female underneath a bridge on a small construction walkway. The female was in emotional distress and threatened to jump if officers approached her. Officers then called for a crisis negotiator to help assist.

While officers were speaking to the female in a calm manner, they noticed the female had collapsed over a single wire at the edge of the walkway. Two officers immediately headed underneath the bridge and rescued the female from falling off the walkway.

“The woman was in obvious distress and the quick action of the police likely saved her life,” said Staff Sargent Steve Vince, NCO i/c New Hazelton Detachment. “They placed themselves at considerable risk, to prevent injury or even death.”

Fire personnel were called to the scene and assisted with the safe removal of everyone from the bridge.

The female was taken to hospital for medical assessment.
