Ended… Hazardous winter conditions for Quesnel and Prince George…

This storm has since ended. As of Feb 8.

Wednesday Update: So far Prince George has had approximately 20 cm of snow fall since yesterday late morning with an additional 15 to 25 cm forecast today. Snow will be moderate at times throughout the day. Heavy snow is currently falling in Hixon along Highway 97.

For today in the Cariboo, heavy snow is forecast for Quesnel and Williams Lake. An additional 30 to 40 cm is forecast for Quesnel while Williams Lake could also see up to 40 cm by Thursday night when the system is supposed to weaken.

Freezing rain is also playing a role the further south you go along Highway 97 so use extreme caution while driving or just don’t go on the highways at all if you don’t need to.

Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Cariboo and Central Interior beginning early this afternoon and ending Thursday overnight, 30 to 50 cm forecast depending on where you live.

For Prince George, Environment Canada is forecasting between 20 and 30 cm of heavy snow, while the bulk of the storm is headed for Quesnel and south. Up to 50 cm is forecast for the Quesnel region. Due to the rise in temperatures, snow will be heavy and wet for Quesnel. The storm system will be headed south to Williams Lake and into the south Cariboo region into 100 Mile House and Clinton by Wednesday.

We are asking all drivers to be extremely cautious if you must travel later today, tonight and all day Wednesday as this storm has potential to be dangerous in rural areas and highways due to snow covered roads and blowing snow from passing vehicles.

We will monitor this storm system as it progresses.

Environment Canada Details…

Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A moist storm system will move into the BC central interior this evening then stall, giving heavy snowfall to the region. Snow will begin this afternoon and intensify this evening. Total snow amounts of 30 to 50 cm are forecast by Wednesday evening. The storm will gradually move southward Wednesday night.

Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Road closures are possible. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
