Driving complaint leads to drug seizure…

KELOWNA, BC: A highway patrol traffic enforcement officer of the RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services (COTS), a unit based out of Kelowna, seized various suspected illicit drugs following a traffic stop conducted as a result of an erratic driving complaint received from the general public.

On January 6th, 2018 at 7:16 pm, a concerned motorist called RCMP to report an erratic and possibly impaired driver in a grey Dodge Ram pickup truck, which was observed having difficultly maintaining its lane, along Highway 33 east of Kelowna. An officer with each RCMP COTS and Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Section located the vehicle pulled over near Brentwood Road.

In the middle of a traffic stop conducted with that vehicle, officers observed a bag believed to contain illicit drugs in plain sight, which led to the driver of that vehicle being taken into police custody.

During a search of that man, incidental to his arrest, police located and seized just over 100 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine, nearly 30 grams of suspected cocaine, almost 7 grams of suspected fentanyl, a dozen grams of marijuana and various items consistent with the trafficking in illegal drugs.

“Thanks to our caller, a potentially dangerous driver and these dangerous drugs have now been removed from our streets”, says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

A 45 year-old West Kootenay man faces potential drug related charges. He was remanded into police custody over the weekend and is expected to appear in Court in Kelowna on January 8th.
