Police say at approximately 12:47 AM, a general duty officer of the Kelowna RCMP was on patrol in the area of Gordon Drive and Guisachan Road when he spotted a large fire coming from a townhouse complex located in the 1200 block of Cameron Avenue.
The officer raced to the complex and blasted his police cruisers air horn and siren to wake residents and immediately requested for backup.
Police had to force entry into as many as 3 separate residential units that were deemed to be in immediate danger of the spreading flames. In some cases police provided assistance to those with mobility issues from their homes.
The Kelowna Fire Department responded to the scene and battled the blaze for several hours while evacuated residents were temporarily sheltered from the cold in city buses.
RCMP continue to secure the scene as specially trained fire investigators with both the Kelowna RCMP and Kelowna Fire Department prepare to examine the fire scene in an attempt to identify a cause.
